The Spitfires of No. 417 Squadron RCAF, also known as the "City of Windsor" Squadron, played a crucial role in the Mediterranean and Italian campaigns during World War II. Established in 1941, it was the only Royal Canadian Air Force squadron to serve exclusively in the Mediterranean Theatre. The squadron transitioned to the iconic Supermarine Spitfire in 1942, flying primarily the Mk V and later the Mk IX variants.

No. 417 Squadron excelled in air-to-air combat and ground-attack roles, supporting the Allied invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. They were instrumental in achieving air superiority and providing close support to ground forces during critical battles like Monte Cassino. Known for their tenacity, the squadron earned a formidable reputation against Axis forces.
