This design was inspired by the P-47 Thunderbolt (WZ-D, Serial Number 42-74742) named "War Eagle Snafu" and was assigned to the 83rd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group. The aircraft had several pilots, including Captain Julius P Maxwell, who destroyed the 78th FG’s 400th German plane on 31st December 1944 on the last mission of his second tour and also the group’s last P-47 Thunderbolt mission. Captain Maxwell had previously shot down a Bf 109 and damaged another in aerial combat. Other Pilots included Lt Severino B Calderon (who named the aircraft “Snafu”), who damaged four German airplanes in strafing missions on enemy airdromes, destroyed a German Stuka dive bomber, shared in the destruction of a Dornier 217, and damaged another Dornier during a strafing attack on German airfields.
