The C-5 Galaxy is a massive strategic airlifter developed by Lockheed for the U.S. Air Force to move outsized cargo across intercontinental distances. The C-5A first flew on Jun 30ᵗʰ, 1968, and the first operational aircraft was delivered to the 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base on Jun 6ᵗʰ, 1970.

Built around cargo volume and range, the Galaxy can carry equipment too large for most other airlifters, including helicopters, armoured vehicles, engineering equipment and large palletised loads. Its nose and rear cargo doors allow crews to load and unload from both ends, while full-width ramps make it possible to drive vehicles directly through the aircraft. The cargo compartment is 143 feet 9 inches long, 19 feet wide and 13 feet 6 inches high.

The C-5 supported U.S. airlift operations from the Vietnam War through Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Kosovo-era humanitarian airlift, Afghanistan and Iraq. The improved C-5B arrived in the 1980s with more than 100 reliability and maintainability changes, while two C-5C aircraft were modified to carry large space cargo.

Today’s C-5M Super Galaxy is the modernised version of the original aircraft. Its upgrades included improved avionics, communications and navigation systems, a modern autopilot, new General Electric F-138 engines and a maintenance diagnostics system. These changes improved reliability, climb rate, takeoff performance and long-range cargo capability. With a maximum payload of 281,001 lb, the C-5M remains one of the most capable military transport aircraft ever built.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
Flex fit , embroidered lettering and good shipping time. That's all you need from a hat and I Love Hangar delivered!
