The C-17 Globemaster III is a large strategic and tactical airlift aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force to provide rapid global transport of troops, vehicles, cargo, and humanitarian aid. Developed by McDonnell Douglas, later absorbed into Boeing, the C-17 was designed to combine long-range strategic airlift capability with the ability to operate from short and austere airfields. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney F117 turbofan engines, the aircraft can carry heavy military equipment including tanks, helicopters, and large troop deployments over intercontinental distances. The RAF’s first C-17 entered service in 2001, initially as a leased aircraft before the fleet was later purchased outright.

The C-17 became one of the RAF’s most important transport aircraft during operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, where it was used extensively for strategic airlift, aeromedical evacuation, and rapid deployment missions. Based at RAF Brize Norton and operated by No. 99 Squadron RAF, the aircraft has also played a major role in humanitarian relief and evacuation operations around the world, including disaster response missions and the evacuation from Afghanistan in 2021. The RAF operates a fleet of C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, which remain a central part of Britain’s global air mobility capability.
