Boston Union Jack Structured Twill Cap
The Boston served extensively with RAF and Commonwealth squadrons in Britain, Europe, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific, carrying out low-level bombing, intruder, strike, and tactical support missions against Axis targets. The Royal Australian Air Force operated 69 Boston and Havoc aircraft in the South West Pacific, primarily with No. 22 Squadron RAAF. The type also became associated with one of the RAAF’s most famous wartime actions when Flight Lieutenant William Ellis Newton was awarded the Victoria Cross for repeated low-level attacks against Japanese positions around Salamaua, New Guinea, during Mar 1943, including operations involving Boston A28-3. Sadly, Newton was shot down while flying Boston A28-8 on Mar 18ᵗʰ, 1943 during another attack mission. He survived the crash and was captured by Japanese forces, but was later executed in captivity.
A total of 7,478 aircraft were built across all DB-7, Boston, Havoc, and A-20 variants, making it one of the most widely produced Allied light bombers of the war.
