Bomber Command Crew (Flight Engineer) Gift Card - Blank inside

$3.99 USD

The Flight Engineer was a vital member of RAF and Commonwealth heavy bomber crews during the Second World War. Sitting beside the pilot, he monitored the engines and managed fuel, oil, cooling and other aircraft systems, allowing the pilot to concentrate on flying the aircraft and completing the mission.

Flight Engineers became a standard part of the seven-man crews of four-engined bombers such as the Lancaster, Halifax and Stirling. They assisted the pilot during take-off and landing, monitored engine temperatures and pressures, managed fuel consumption and transferred fuel between tanks as required. They were also trained in the basics of flying the aircraft in case the pilot became incapacitated.

The role demanded considerable technical knowledge and the ability to diagnose and respond to mechanical problems in flight. On long Bomber Command operations over occupied Europe and Germany, careful management of the aircraft's engines and fuel could be critical to completing the mission and bringing the bomber home.
