The Convair B-58 Hustler, the first supersonic bomber, was operated by the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1970. Known for its delta wing and four-engine design, it was capable of Mach 2 speeds (1,325 mph) and could reach altitudes up to 63,000 feet. Only 116 B-58s were built, and while its operational life was short, it set numerous speed and altitude records, including the Bendix Trophy in 1962, where it flew from Los Angeles to New York in just over 2 hours. The B-58 was primarily used for strategic bombing missions but was retired due to high operating costs and advancements in ICBM technology, which made it less essential. Its technological advancements influenced future designs, though its need for high maintenance ultimately limited its service life.
