This design is based on B-17 " Spirit of 44" (322BS/91BG) Serial No. 42-37940 .  Spirit of '44, was christened around New Year's Day 1944 and assigned to Lt. Eldridge V Greer and his crew. It flew only six missions before sustaining damage so severe it had to be scrapped, but not before safely returning its crew each time.  On its final mission on January 11, 1944, the Spirit of '44 bombed the Focke-Wulf plant in Oschersleben. After enemy fire knocked out two engines, the bomber couldn’t keep up with its formation and flew at low altitudes to avoid anti-aircraft fire. For 90 minutes, Lt. Greer skilfully flew the damaged B-17 at or below treetop level over German towns, forcing Luftwaffe pilots to avoid firing directly into their own people. Despite the crew preparing to ditch several times, they managed to lighten the load and return to Shipman, England. The plane had at least 250 bullet holes, an 18-inch hole in the radio room, and its plexiglass nose shot out.
