B-17 "Nine-O-Nine" Backpack
B-17G Flying Fortress 42-31909, known as "Nine-O-Nine," was a legendary World War II bomber that served with the 323rd Bomb Squadron of the 91st Bomb Group. The aircraft flew 140 combat missions over Europe without losing a crew member, a remarkable achievement given the high-risk nature of its missions. "Nine-O-Nine" participated in key operations, including bombing raids over Germany, and became one of the most well-known B-17s for its reliability and effectiveness. After the war, it was scrapped, but a B-17 was later restored and named "Nine-O-Nine" in its honor. Tragically, this restored version was involved in a fatal crash in 2019 during a demonstration flight, marking the end of its legacy.
