B-17G 42-37807, Alice from Dallas II (also called Rogers’ Raiders), entered service with the 350th Bomb Squadron, 100th Bomb Group at Thorpe Abbotts in September 1943 as the replacement for the original Alice from Dallas (42-5867), which exploded in a fireball over Belgium on 17 August 1943, killing two of its crew, with three captured and five managing to evade. The new Fortress carried on the name and was flown by several crews, most notably those of Lt. Bill DeSanders and Lt. Julian P. Rogers. On 13 February 1944, DeSanders and Lt. John “Lucky” Luckadoo completed their 25th mission in Alice from Dallas II, marking the end of their combat tours. The aircraft remained in front-line service, and on 19 May 1944, with Rogers’ crew aboard during a raid on Berlin, it lost three engines to fighter attack and was forced to ditch in the North Sea. The B-17 broke apart on impact, but the crew survived and was rescued by a Danish fishing vessel before being transferred to a British high-speed launch.

Many thanks for my wonderful sneakers!  I shall wear them with pride to remember my 25th mission with Bill DeSanders.

John "Lucky" Luckadoo (B-17 Pilot)
