The B-1B Lancer, widely known as the “Bone” from “B-One”, is a long-range, supersonic heavy bomber operated by the U.S. Air Force. The original B-1A was developed in the 1970s as a high-speed strategic bomber, but the production B-1B became a lower-observable, heavier-payload version designed for long-range penetration missions. The first production B-1 flew in October 1984, the first B-1B was delivered to Dyess Air Force Base in June 1985, and the type achieved initial operational capability on Oct 1ˢᵗ, 1986.

The B-1B is known for its blended wing-body shape and variable-sweep wings, which allow the aircraft to change configuration for takeoff, landing, refuelling, high-speed flight and low-level operations. Powered by four afterburning turbofan engines, it can reach Mach 1.2 and carry up to 75,000 lb of weapons, giving it the largest conventional payload of any U.S. Air Force bomber.

Although designed during the Cold War for the nuclear strike mission, the B-1B was later shifted to conventional-only operations. The nuclear mission was removed in 1994, and the physical conversion to conventional-only status was completed in Mar 2011. The B-1B first saw combat during Operation Desert Fox over Iraq in Dec 1998, then flew in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria. Its mix of speed, range, payload, precision weapons and long loiter time made it useful for close air support, interdiction and long-range strike missions.

The B-1B remains in U.S. Air Force service while the bomber force transitions toward newer aircraft such as the B-21 Raider. Ongoing updates to avionics, communications, weapons carriage and sustainment are intended to keep the Lancer useful through the late 2030s.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
