The A-7 Corsair II was a carrier-capable, subsonic attack aircraft designed by Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV) for the U.S. Navy, entering service in 1967 during the Vietnam War. Derived from the F-8 Crusader, it was designed as a lightweight, cost-effective attack platform with an emphasis on payload and range. Powered by a single TF30 or later TF41 turbofan engine, the A-7 could carry an impressive payload of bombs, rockets, and missiles, including guided weapons, making it one of the earliest jets with an integrated heads-up display (HUD) and navigation/attack systems.

The A-7 saw extensive combat during the Vietnam War, excelling in close air support, strike missions, and interdiction, thanks to its precision bombing capabilities. It later served in conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm in 1991 before being retired from U.S. service. A total of 1,569 A-7s were built, serving not only the U.S. Navy and Air Force but also several allied nations, including Greece and Portugal. Known for its reliability and effectiveness, the A-7 earned the nickname “SLUF” (Short Little Ugly Fella) and remains a respected aircraft in attack aviation history.
