The Douglas A-1 Skyraider, originally designated the AD Skyraider, was a primarily single-seat, piston-engine attack aircraft developed for the United States Navy during the closing stages of the Second World War. The XBT2D-1 prototype first flew on Mar 18ᵗʰ, 1945, but the type arrived too late to see combat during the war. Deliveries to the U.S. Navy began in Nov 1946, and the AD series was redesignated A-1 under the unified U.S. military aircraft designation system in 1962. Powered by a Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone radial engine, the Skyraider combined long range, exceptional endurance and a weapons load of up to approximately 8,000 lb.

Nicknamed the “Spad”, the Skyraider served with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during the Korean War and with the U.S. Navy and Air Force during the Vietnam War. It excelled in close air support, ground attack, armed reconnaissance and combat search-and-rescue missions. USAF Skyraiders using the “Sandy” call sign located and protected downed aircrew, escorted rescue helicopters and suppressed enemy fire during some of the most dangerous missions of the Vietnam War. Specialised Skyraider variants also served in night attack, airborne early warning and electronic-warfare roles.

One of the aircraft’s most remarkable achievements occurred on Oct 9ᵗʰ, 1966, when Lieutenant junior grade William T. Patton of VA-176 shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-17 near Hanoi while flying A-1H Skyraider BuNo. 137543. It was the second confirmed MiG-17 victory achieved by U.S. Navy Skyraiders during the war, following a shared victory by VA-25 pilots Lieutenant Clinton B. Johnson and Lieutenant junior grade Charles W. Hartman III on Jun 20ᵗʰ, 1965.

A total of 3,180 Skyraiders were built between 1945 and 1957. The type was retired from U.S. military service in 1973 but continued flying with the Republic of Vietnam Air Force until the fall of Saigon in 1975. Although replaced by jet-powered attack aircraft such as the A-6 Intruder and A-7 Corsair II, the Skyraider remains one of the most successful and versatile attack aircraft of the post-war era.
