The Eighth Air Force (USAAF), known as the "Mighty Eighth," was established on 19 January 1942 and activated on 1 February 1942 at Langley Field, Virginia. It deployed to England in May 1942, becoming the primary American strategic bombing force in Europe during World War II. Operating aircraft such as the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, the Eighth conducted extensive daylight bombing campaigns against Nazi-occupied Europe and Germany, targeting industrial sites, transportation hubs, and military installations. These operations were instrumental in crippling Germany's war capabilities and achieving air superiority.

The Eighth Air Force also utilized fighters like the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang for bomber escort and air combat missions. By the end of the war, the Eighth had flown more than 600,000 sorties and dropped over 670,000 tons of bombs. However, this success came at a high cost, with over 26,000 airmen killed in action and many more wounded or taken prisoner. The valor and sacrifice of its personnel earned them numerous commendations, including 17 Medals of Honor and 220 Distinguished Service Crosses. The Eighth Air Force's relentless campaign significantly contributed to the Allied victory in Europe
