No. 79 Squadron RAAF was based at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base from May 1962 to July 1968 as part of Australia’s commitment to the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) during the Cold War.

Flying CAC Sabre Mk.32 jet fighters, the squadron’s mission was to provide air defence for Thailand and support allied forces in the region amidst growing tensions from the Vietnam conflict. Although 79 Squadron was not directly involved in combat operations over Vietnam, it flew air defence patrols, interception missions, and regular training exercises with the Royal Thai Air Force and U.S. forces. The deployment was also symbolic, showing Australia’s strategic presence in Southeast Asia.

The squadron remained on high alert throughout its time at Ubon but did not engage in any aerial combat. It was withdrawn in 1968 as Australia’s direct involvement in Vietnam escalated, with resources being redirected to squadrons deployed in South Vietnam itself.
