7th Air Force USAAF Embroidered Patch
The Seventh Air Force (USAAF) was a key component of the United States’ air power in the Pacific during World War II, primarily tasked with defending the Hawaiian Islands and supporting operations across the Central Pacific. Established in 1940 as the Hawaiian Air Force, it was reorganised after the attack on Pearl Harbor to strengthen the defence of the islands and prepare for offensive campaigns.
Initially focused on air defence and patrols, the Seventh Air Force transitioned to an offensive role as the war progressed. Operating aircraft like the B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell, and P-47 Thunderbolt, it supported island-hopping campaigns in the Central Pacific, including the battles of the Marshall Islands, the Mariana Islands, and the iconic assault on Iwo Jima. Its bombers targeted Japanese airfields, supply lines, and fortifications, while its fighters provided escort and air superiority.
The Seventh Air Force played a crucial role in establishing forward air bases that enabled the eventual bombing of Japan, contributing to the overall success of the Pacific campaign. It demonstrated adaptability, moving from a defensive force to a critical offensive element in the Allied push toward victory.
