VFA-22, known as the “Fighting Redcocks,” is a U.S. Navy strike fighter squadron with a lineage dating back to 1948. Originally established as VF-63, the unit has gone through several redesignations, ultimately becoming Strike Fighter Squadron 22 (VFA-22) in 1990 when it transitioned to the F/A-18 Hornet. Today, the squadron operates the F/A-18F Super Hornet, providing both air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities as part of Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17).

The squadron's tail code is "NA", and its radio callsign is “Redcock”. One of its most recognisable markings is “YCBARC”, a morale acronym meaning “You Can’t Beat A Red Cock”. While not used in official communication, YCBARC has become part of the squadron’s unique identity and esprit de corps, commonly appearing on unit patches, shirts, and informal materials.

VFA-22 has deployed aboard multiple U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and participated in major operations including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. With a reputation for combat readiness and professionalism, the “Redcocks” remain a respected component of the U.S. Navy’s carrier air wing structure.
