Did you know the X-15 is the fastest crewed aircraft ever, reaching an astonishing 7,273 km/h (4,520 mph), over Mach 6.7, in 1967 with Major William "Pete" Knight at the controls? This rocket-powered marvel, which first flew just 14 years after World War II, could soar to the edge of space, climbing up to 107.8 km (67 miles) above Earth. Pilots like Neil Armstrong even earned astronaut wings for their missions. Powered by its mighty XLR99 rocket engine producing 57,000 pounds of thrust, the X-15 paved the way for future spacecraft like the Space Shuttle. Incredible progress in such a short time.
