The Avro Vulcan was a British jet-powered strategic bomber developed by A.V. Roe and Company as part of the Royal Air Force’s V-bomber nuclear deterrent force during the Cold War. Designed under Roy Chadwick and later Stuart Davies, the Vulcan featured a distinctive tailless delta wing that gave it excellent high-altitude performance and unusual manoeuvrability for a large bomber. It first flew on 30 Aug 1952 and entered RAF service in 1956. Powered by four Bristol Olympus turbojet engines, the Vulcan was capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons and became a key component of Britain’s airborne nuclear deterrent during the 1950s and 1960s.

The Vulcan served alongside the Handley Page Victor and Vickers Valiant as one of Britain’s three V-bombers. Originally designed for high-altitude nuclear strike missions, the aircraft later transitioned to low-level penetration operations as Soviet air defence systems improved. The Vulcan is best known for its combat role during the Falklands War, when Vulcans carried out the long-range Black Buck bombing raids against Argentine positions on the Falkland Islands, supported by Victor tanker aircraft. A total of 136 Vulcans were built, and the type remained in RAF service until 1984, becoming one of the most recognisable military aircraft of the Cold War era.
