Development of the AIM-9 Sidewinder began at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake in the late 1940s. Following its first live firing in September 1952 and its first successful drone intercept in September 1953, the missile entered U.S. Navy service in 1956. Designed as a lightweight, heat-seeking weapon, its simple, reliable design quickly made it one of the world's most successful air-to-air missiles.

The Sidewinder achieved its first combat victories during the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis, becoming the first guided air-to-air missile to score confirmed aerial kills. It went on to see extensive service during the Vietnam War and has since been employed in conflicts around the world. Continuous development transformed it from a rear-aspect missile into an advanced all-aspect weapon, with modern AIM-9X variants featuring imaging infrared guidance, thrust-vectoring and compatibility with helmet-mounted sighting systems.

More than 200,000 Sidewinders have been produced for over 30 nations. Nearly 70 years after entering service, the Sidewinder remains one of the world's most effective and widely used air-to-air missiles, a testament to the remarkable longevity of its original design.
