The Handley Page Victor was a British jet-powered strategic bomber developed by Handley Page as part of the Royal Air Force’s V-bomber nuclear deterrent force during the Cold War. Designed by Reginald Stafford, the Victor featured a distinctive crescent-shaped wing that provided excellent high-altitude performance and speed. It first flew on 24 Dec 1952 and entered RAF service in 1958. Early Victor B.1 aircraft were powered by Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire turbojets, while later B.2 variants used more powerful Rolls-Royce Conway engines. Originally intended for high-altitude nuclear strike missions, the Victor later transitioned to low-level penetration operations as Soviet air defences improved.

The Victor served alongside the Avro Vulcan and Vickers Valiant as one of Britain’s three V-bombers. From the late 1960s onward, many aircraft were converted into aerial refuelling tankers, a role in which they served for more than two decades. Victor tankers played a major role during the Falklands War, supporting the long-range Black Buck raids and RAF operations across the South Atlantic. A total of 86 Victors were built, and the aircraft remained in RAF service until 1993, becoming the last operational V-bomber in British service.
