The Vickers VC10 became one of the Royal Air Force’s most important long-range transport and aerial refuelling aircraft during the late Cold War and post-Cold War era. Originally developed by Vickers-Armstrongs as a long-range jet airliner, the VC10 first flew on 29 Jun 1962 before later entering RAF service in transport and tanker roles. The RAF began operating the type in 1966 with No. 10 Squadron RAF, initially using VC10 C.1 transport aircraft to support global troop movements, VIP transport, and strategic airlift operations. Powered by four rear-mounted Rolls-Royce Conway turbofan engines, the VC10 became well known for its high cruising speed, strong hot-and-high airfield performance, and long-range capability.

During the 1980s and 1990s, former civilian VC10 airliners were converted into aerial refuelling aircraft, leading to the K.2, K.3, and K.4 tanker variants that became a major part of the RAF’s air-to-air refuelling fleet alongside the Lockheed TriStar. RAF VC10s supported operations during the Falklands War, the Gulf War, the Balkans conflicts, Iraq, Afghanistan, and numerous long-range transport and humanitarian missions around the world. The aircraft served under several RAF transport and support commands and remained in frontline military service for nearly five decades before the final RAF VC10 retired in Sep 2013.
