The de Havilland Vampire was a British single-engine jet fighter developed by de Havilland during the final years of the Second World War and became one of the Royal Air Force’s first operational jet aircraft. Designed around the pioneering de Havilland Goblin turbojet engine, the Vampire featured a distinctive twin-boom tail layout and first flew on 20 Sep 1943. Entering RAF service in 1946, the Vampire helped transition the RAF from piston-engined fighters to the jet age and became one of the first jet fighters exported widely around the world.

The Vampire served in fighter, fighter-bomber, trainer, and navalised roles, with variants operating in more than 30 countries. It was also the first jet aircraft to land and take off from an aircraft carrier when a modified Royal Navy Sea Vampire operated from HMS Ocean in 1945. More than 4,400 Vampires were built, including aircraft produced under licence in countries such as Switzerland, France, and Australia. The type remained in RAF frontline service through the 1950s and continued serving with some overseas air forces into the 1970s, becoming one of the most widely used early jet fighters of the post-war era.
