The Vickers Valiant was a British jet-powered strategic bomber developed by Vickers-Armstrongs as the first of the Royal Air Force’s V-bombers to enter operational service during the Cold War. Designed by George Edwards to meet Britain’s post-war nuclear deterrent requirements, the Valiant featured a clean, conventional swept-wing design optimised for high-altitude bombing missions. It first flew on 18 May 1951 and entered RAF service in 1955. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines, the Valiant was capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons and became the RAF’s first operational jet-powered nuclear bomber.

The Valiant served alongside the Avro Vulcan and Handley Page Victor as part of Britain’s V-bomber force. It played a significant role during the early Cold War, including Britain’s first operational hydrogen bomb tests during Operation Grapple in 1957. The aircraft was also used in conventional bombing operations during the Suez Crisis, making it the only V-bomber to carry out combat bombing missions. Later in its career, many Valiants were adapted for aerial refuelling duties. A total of 107 aircraft were built, but structural fatigue problems caused by low-level flying led to the type’s early retirement in 1965. Despite its relatively short service life, the Valiant played a major role in establishing Britain’s independent nuclear deterrent during the 1950s and early 1960s.
