VA-65 “Fighting Tigers” operated the Grumman A-6 Intruder from 1965 to March 31, 1993. The squadron’s tiger insignia became iconic aboard US carriers, including USS Independence and USS Eisenhower, as their aircraft flew night and all-weather, radar-guided deep strike missions in Vietnam, the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Indian Ocean. VA-65 participated in combat over Vietnam, conducting radar-guided, all-weather deep strikes against heavily defended targets. Through the Cold War, the squadron maintained a presence in major fleet exercises, crisis operations, and NATO deployments. During the Libya crisis period of 1986, US Navy Intruders participated in long-range strikes; VA-65 conducted extensive Mediterranean operations in this era. Their missions included strike coordination, navigation in adverse conditions, and aerial refueling using the KA-6D, often supporting and coordinating with dedicated electronic warfare assets. The squadron was present in significant operations such as Desert Storm, delivering high-impact sorties against Iraqi forces. VA-65’s tactical proficiency extended to adapting new weapons systems and electronic countermeasures, fostering cross-fleet training and rapid carrier deployment capability. The tiger symbolized courage, agility, and ferocity, qualities reflected in the squadron’s operational ethos. With three decades on the Intruder, the Fighting Tigers helped shape carrier-based attack doctrine and contributed to US naval airpower’s global reputation. [1][2][3]
