VA-52 “Knight Riders” operated the A-6 Intruder from 1967 until 1995. The squadron transitioned from earlier attack platforms into all weather medium attack work using A-6A/B/C/E and later A-6E TRAM and SWIP aircraft. Through the Vietnam War and the Cold War years they deployed widely across the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea. VA-52 flew multiple combat periods during Vietnam, including night and bad weather strike missions that relied on the Intruder’s attack systems. During the 1970s and 1980s the Knight Riders supported Western Pacific carrier presence operations, Indian Ocean contingencies, and joint exercises across the region. They operated TRAM and later SWIP upgraded A-6Es as these systems were introduced to the fleet, gaining extensive experience with the evolving capabilities of the aircraft. In the early 1990s the squadron deployed to the Arabian Sea and supported post Gulf War commitments, including maritime strike readiness and regional stability operations. VA-52 was disestablished in 1995, closing more than twenty five years of continuous Intruder operations defined by regular deployments, heavy weather strike capability, and long experience across Pacific and Indian Ocean theatres.[1][2][3][4][5]
