The V-22 Osprey is a revolutionary tiltrotor aircraft developed by Bell and Boeing, combining the vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities of a helicopter with the speed and range of a turboprop airplane. First flown in 1989 and entering service in 2007 after a long and challenging development, the Osprey represents a major leap in military aviation design.

The aircraft features tilting nacelles that allow its rotors to pivot between vertical and horizontal flight modes. This makes the V-22 ideal for missions requiring rapid deployment, long-range infiltration or extraction, and flexibility in terrain where helicopters would be limited. It can cruise at over 270 knots and has a range of over 1,000 nautical miles with internal fuel.

Primarily used by the U.S. Marine Corps (MV-22), U.S. Air Force (CV-22), and U.S. Navy (CMV-22), the Osprey has replaced older platforms like the CH-46 Sea Knight and some variants of the MH-53. The Marines use it for troop assault and logistics, the Air Force employs it for special operations, and the Navy for carrier resupply.

Despite early safety concerns, the V-22 has proven itself in combat and humanitarian missions across Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond. With over 400 aircraft built, the Osprey is now a cornerstone of modern U.S. military air mobility — bridging the gap between helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft in ways few other platforms can.

Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony.  This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
