UH-60 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
The UH-60 Black Hawk is a twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter that entered U.S. Army service in 1979, replacing the UH-1 Iroquois as the Army’s standard tactical transport. Designed for improved speed, payload, and survivability, it features advanced avionics, redundant systems, and crashworthy structures. Powered by two General Electric T700 turboshafts, it cruises at around 183 mph (294 km/h) with a range of over 360 miles (580 km).
More than 4,000 Black Hawks have been built, serving not only the U.S. Army but also the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard in specialised variants, as well as over 30 allied nations. The UH-60 has seen combat in Grenada, Panama, Somalia, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, and numerous other operations, performing air assault, medevac, command and control, and special operations roles.
Notable missions include Operation Gothic Serpent (Somalia, 1993), where two MH-60L Black Hawks were shot down during the “Black Hawk Down” incident, and countless medevac rescues in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Constantly upgraded through the UH-60M and other modern variants, the Black Hawk remains central to U.S. and allied rotary-wing operations more than four decades after its introduction.
Why are the stripes vertical?
Great question - and you're absolutely right that the U.S. flag is usually displayed with horizontal stripes. But in this design, we’ve reimagined the flag as an artistic tribute rather than a literal representation. We chose to depict the flag as if it were hanging vertically from above, similar to how it might appear draped at a hangar entrance or suspended during a ceremony. This vertical orientation allows the iconic silhouette of the aircraft to really shine -with the red and white stripes running the length of the fuselage, it creates a bold, centred look while still honouring the flag’s spirit and symbolism.
