The Bell UH-1 Iroquois, widely known as the Huey, became the principal troop-carrying helicopter of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Transport aircraft were commonly called “Slicks” to distinguish them from heavily armed Huey gunships. Slicks did not carry fixed rocket or gun systems, although crew chiefs and door gunners commonly operated M60 machine guns from the cabin doors. Their primary duties included inserting and extracting infantry, resupplying forward units, evacuating casualties and carrying personnel throughout the battlefield.

A defining example of the Slick mission occurred during the Battle of Ia Drang on Nov 14ᵗʰ, 1965. Major Bruce P. Crandall, commanding a flight of UH-1Ds from Company A, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, repeatedly flew into Landing Zone X-Ray despite intense enemy fire. During 22 flights that day, Crandall and his crews delivered troops, ammunition and supplies and helped evacuate approximately 70 wounded soldiers. His unarmed helicopter made 14 landings under fire after medical evacuation aircraft were unable to continue operating in the landing zone.

Crandall received the Medal of Honor in 2007 for his actions at Ia Drang. His courage, together with that of the other pilots and crews who continued flying into the surrounded landing zone, demonstrated the importance of helicopter mobility during the Vietnam War. The UH-1 Slick allowed troops and supplies to move rapidly across difficult terrain and became one of the conflict’s most recognisable aircraft.
