he UH-1 “Slick” was the unarmed troop transport variant of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, fitted with smooth-sided doors and no fixed door guns (crew chiefs could mount M60s if needed). Its primary role was inserting and extracting infantry, resupplying forward units, and conducting general air mobility missions. Slicks were a lifeline for U.S. forces in Vietnam, able to deliver troops directly into landing zones (LZs) and extract them under fire.

A defining moment came on 14 November 1965 at the Battle of Ia Drang, when Major Bruce P. Crandall of the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion repeatedly flew his unarmed UH-1D into a landing zone under intense enemy fire. Across 22 missions that day, he delivered ammunition and evacuated over 70 wounded soldiers. Crandall’s bravery earned him the Medal of Honor and became an enduring example of the Slick pilot’s courage — relying on skill, speed, and teamwork rather than heavy armament.

The combination of mobility, versatility, and the willingness of crews to risk everything for their missions made the UH-1 Slick one of the Vietnam War’s most enduring symbols.
