The UH-1 Iroquois, widely known as the Huey, was adapted early in the Vietnam War into one of the first widely used armed helicopter gunships. Originally designed as a utility and troop transport helicopter, the UH-1A and UH-1B were quickly fitted with M60 machine guns, M134 7.62 mm Miniguns and 2.75-inch (70 mm) rocket pods to provide close air support and armed escort for troop-carrying helicopters. These armed aircraft, commonly known as Huey gunships, operated alongside unarmed transport Hueys, known as "Slicks." Rocket-heavy gunships were often nicknamed "Hogs," while gun-focused aircraft became known as "Frogs."

The UH-1B and later UH-1C introduced more powerful engines, improved rotor systems and stronger weapon mounts, making them highly effective in supporting the air assault tactics pioneered during the Vietnam War. Gunships suppressed enemy positions before and during troop landings, escorted transport helicopters, attacked ambushes and provided immediate fire support to ground forces. Despite their effectiveness, their relatively slow speed and large profile left them vulnerable to ground fire, and many were lost in combat.

From 1967 onward, the dedicated AH-1G Cobra increasingly assumed the gunship role thanks to its narrower profile, greater speed and improved survivability. Nevertheless, armed Hueys continued to serve throughout the Vietnam War in fire support, convoy escort and night operations alongside the Cobra.

More than 16,000 UH-1s of all variants were built, with over 7,000 serving in Vietnam. The Huey gunship became one of the defining aircraft of the conflict and established many of the helicopter attack tactics later employed by dedicated attack helicopters around the world.
