The Bell UH-1 Iroquois, widely known as the Huey, became the backbone of U.S. Army aeromedical evacuation during the Vietnam War. Dedicated Army air-ambulance units used the call sign “Dustoff” while flying into combat zones to retrieve wounded American, allied and South Vietnamese personnel. Fitted with litters and medical equipment, these helicopters were generally unarmed and marked with Red Cross insignia, relying on speed, skilled crews and supporting forces when entering hostile landing zones.

Dustoff missions greatly reduced the time between battlefield injury and hospital treatment. Crews frequently flew through enemy fire, poor weather and difficult terrain to deliver casualties to medical facilities, sometimes within minutes of being called. Their work helped establish rapid helicopter evacuation as a central part of modern battlefield medicine.

One of the defining figures of Dustoff was Major Charles L. Kelly, commander of the 57th Medical Detachment. On Jul 1ˢᵗ, 1964, Kelly attempted to land near Vinh Long to collect wounded soldiers while under heavy enemy fire. When warned to withdraw, he replied, “When I have your wounded.” Moments later, a bullet struck him through the chest, killing him at the controls. His final words became the enduring battle cry of Dustoff crews and a statement of their commitment to wounded personnel.

From May 1962 to Mar 1973, U.S. Army aeromedical units flew nearly 500,000 missions and evacuated almost 900,000 American, allied and Vietnamese patients. The courage and persistence of Dustoff crews helped transform battlefield casualty evacuation and created a medical-aviation tradition that continues in the U.S. Army today.
