U-2 "Dragon Lady" Tumbler, 32oz (950ml)
The U-2 Dragon Lady, introduced in 1957, is a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed for the USAF. Distinguished by its long wings and lightweight structure, it can operate at altitudes of up to 70,000 feet, enabling vital intelligence-gathering missions. The U-2's legacy includes an early emphasis on minimizing radar cross-section, a precursor to later stealth technology. Despite its age, the U-2 remains an important asset, serving in intelligence-gathering roles around the world and playing a significant part in the evolution of reconnaissance aircraft.
In 1963, the CIA began Project Whale Tale to develop carrier-capable U-2Gs to overcome range limitations. During the development of this capability, CIA pilots took off from and landed U-2Gs aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger and other carriers. The U-2G was used operationally only twice. Both missions were flown from Ranger in May 1964 to observe France's development of a nuclear test site at Moruroa in French Polynesia.
