TriStar Union Jack Structured Twill Cap
The RAF operated the TriStar in several configurations. The K.1 and KC.1 variants combined air-to-air refuelling with passenger transport, while the KC.1 could also carry palletised freight through its large cargo door. The C.2 and C.2A aircraft served primarily as long-range passenger and transport aircraft. Together, the fleet could move personnel and supplies around the world while its tankers extended the range and endurance of RAF fast jets.
The TriStar participated in nearly every major British operation during its service, including the Gulf War, operations over the Balkans, and deployments supporting forces in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. It provided an essential airbridge for troops and cargo while also refuelling combat aircraft during operations. Affectionately known as “Timmy” by its crews, the aircraft became a familiar part of the RAF’s long-range support fleet.
The TriStar completed its final operational mission on 24 March 2014. Its transport and air-to-air refuelling duties were taken over by the Airbus Voyager, bringing almost three decades of RAF TriStar operations to an end.
