The Panavia Tornado was a British multirole strike and attack aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force from the early 1980s until 2019. Developed by the multinational Panavia Aircraft GmbH consortium, the Tornado GR variants were designed primarily for low-level, high-speed strike missions against heavily defended targets during the Cold War. Powered by two Turbo-Union RB199 turbofan engines and featuring variable-sweep wings, the aircraft combined high speed, long range, and the ability to operate in all weather conditions. The Tornado GR.1 entered RAF service in 1982, while later GR4 upgrades introduced improved avionics, navigation systems, cockpit displays, night-attack capability, and compatibility with modern precision-guided weapons.

The Tornado GR force became one of the RAF’s principal strike capabilities during the late Cold War and post-Cold War era, seeing extensive combat service in the Gulf War, Kosovo conflict, Iraq War, War in Afghanistan, and operations over Libya and Syria. Capable of carrying a wide range of conventional and precision-guided weapons, including Paveway laser-guided bombs, Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and Brimstone missiles, the Tornado developed a reputation for versatility, survivability, and long-range strike capability. The aircraft served with numerous RAF squadrons before retiring from frontline RAF service in 2019 after more than three decades of operational use.
