The P-47 Thunderbolt was a large single-engine American fighter and fighter-bomber operated by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Developed by Republic Aviation and powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the Thunderbolt became one of the heaviest and most heavily armed single-engine fighters of the war. In RAF service, early razorback variants were designated Thunderbolt Mk.I, while later bubble-canopy aircraft became known as the Thunderbolt Mk.II. Although the Thunderbolt saw only limited RAF service in Europe, it became an important fighter-bomber and ground-attack aircraft in the Far East.

The Thunderbolt served primarily with RAF and Royal Indian Air Force squadrons operating in Burma and Southeast Asia against Japanese forces. Armed with eight .50-calibre machine guns and capable of carrying bombs and rockets, it proved highly effective in armed reconnaissance and strike missions in difficult tropical conditions. The aircraft gained a strong reputation for ruggedness, firepower, and survivability during low-level operations. Approximately 15,600 P-47 Thunderbolts were built across all variants, making it one of the most widely produced American fighters of the war, while RAF-operated Thunderbolts remained in frontline service in the Far East until the end of the conflict in 1945.
