The Big 2 "Best In The West" Lapel Pin
No. 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School (2 CFFTS), widely known as the “Big 2”, has been a major centre of military pilot training in Canada for decades. Its origins date to September 1945, when No. 2 Flying Training School was formed at Yorkton, Saskatchewan. The school moved to RCAF Station Moose Jaw in June 1953 and remains based there as part of 15 Wing.
Its motto, “The Best in the West”, and the familiar “Big 2” nickname are longstanding parts of the school's identity. Generations of Canadian military pilots received basic and advanced training there, including those who flew the Canadair CT-114 Tutor. The last course taught exclusively on the Tutor was in 1999, as the school transitioned to the NATO Flying Training in Canada programme.
The Big 2 also has a direct connection with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. In 1970, volunteer instructors from the school formed an aerobatic demonstration team that later became the Snowbirds.
