T-38 Stars & Stripes Structured Twill Cap
Powered by two General Electric J85 turbojet engines with afterburners, the T-38 can reach approximately 812 mph and climb from sea level to nearly 30,000 feet in one minute. Its streamlined fuselage, swept wings, tandem seating and responsive handling made it well suited to advanced pilot training. More than 1,100 Talons were delivered to the U.S. Air Force between 1961 and 1972, while smaller numbers also served with the U.S. Navy, NASA and several overseas air forces.
The T-38 has trained generations of American fighter and bomber pilots, preparing aircrew for aircraft including the F-4 Phantom II, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor and other high-performance types. NASA continues to operate the Talon for astronaut spaceflight-readiness training, pilot proficiency and mission-support duties, including chase flights.
Despite its age, the T-38 remains in USAF service following extensive structural, engine and avionics upgrades, including the T-38C modernisation and Pacer Classic sustainment programme. The Boeing T-7A Red Hawk has begun entering the training system and is intended to replace the T-38, with Initial Operational Capability currently targeted for Aug 2027. Until that transition is complete, the Talon continues to serve as one of the principal advanced jet trainers of the United States Air Force.
