The Boeing-Stearman Model 75, widely known as the Stearman or Kaydet, was one of the most important primary training aircraft of the Second World War. Developed from earlier Stearman trainer designs of the mid-1930s, it was adopted by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1936. With its open tandem cockpits, fixed landing gear, radial engine and fabric-covered biplane wings, the Kaydet introduced thousands of student pilots to military flying.

The Army operated the aircraft under several designations based largely on the engine installed. The PT-13 used a Lycoming R-680, the PT-17 used a Continental R-670 and the less numerous PT-18 used a Jacobs R-755. The U.S. Navy operated its versions as the NS and N2S, while the Royal Canadian Air Force also used the Kaydet for primary training. Although relatively forgiving in flight, its conventional tailwheel undercarriage demanded careful handling during take-off and landing, helping students develop essential flying skills before progressing to more advanced trainers.

Kaydets were used to teach basic aircraft control, formation flying, navigation, aerobatics, spins and take-off and landing procedures. They trained pilots for the U.S. Army Air Forces, U.S. Navy and several Allied nations, including many airmen who later flew combat missions across every major theatre of the war. Members of the Tuskegee Airmen also completed primary flight training in Stearman PT-13 and PT-17 aircraft at Moton Field.

Boeing produced 8,584 complete aircraft between 1936 and 1944, along with enough spare parts to assemble approximately 2,000 additional aircraft. After the war, thousands were sold into civilian use and converted into agricultural aircraft, sports aircraft and airshow performers. Many remain airworthy today, making the Stearman one of the most recognisable and enduring military trainers of its era.
