The Spitfire Mk I was the original production version of R.J. Mitchell’s legendary fighter design and entered RAF service in 1938, becoming a symbol of British resistance during the early years of World War II. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin II or III engine producing around 1,030 horsepower, the Mk I had a top speed of approximately 360 mph and a ceiling of 34,000 feet. It was armed with eight .303 Browning machine guns and had excellent manoeuvrability and climb rate, making it a formidable opponent during the Battle of Britain in 1940.

The first prototype flew on 5 March 1936, and the first production aircraft took to the air in May 1938, with No. 19 Squadron at Duxford receiving the type later that year. A total of 1,566 Mk I aircraft were built, primarily at Supermarine’s Southampton factories. Early Mk Is featured a two-blade fixed-pitch propeller and unarmoured cockpit, but these were progressively upgraded with three-blade variable-pitch propellers, bulletproof windscreens, and improved gunsights. The Mk I was eventually superseded by the Mk II in late 1940 but remained in service in training and secondary roles.
