The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX was a British single-seat fighter aircraft developed during World War II as an urgent response to the Luftwaffe’s Focke-Wulf Fw 190, which had outclassed earlier Spitfire models. Rather than waiting for the entirely new Mk VIII to be ready, Supermarine adapted the existing Mk V airframe to accommodate the new Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 engine—a powerful two-stage, two-speed supercharged V12—which dramatically improved high-altitude performance.

The first Mk IX flew on 24 April 1942 and entered operational service by June that year, initially with No. 64 Squadron RAF. With a top speed of around 408 mph at 25,000 feet and a service ceiling exceeding 40,000 feet, it restored parity for RAF Fighter Command and became one of the most successful variants of the Spitfire. Typically armed with four .303 Browning machine guns, it could also be fitted with two 20 mm Hispano cannons, making the Mk IX versatile enough to serve in air superiority, bomber escort, and fighter-bomber roles across Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Approximately 5,665 Mk IXs were built, making it one of the most produced versions of the Spitfire. It remained in front-line use until the end of the war and was exported post-war to several countries, including Czechoslovakia, Israel, and the Netherlands.
