Introduced in 1942, it excelled as a bomber escort, protecting Allied heavy bombers deep into enemy territory. Powered by the Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Mustang could reach speeds over 440 mph (708 km/h) and altitudes of 41,900 feet (12,800 metres), giving it unmatched performance in combat.
