The Gloster Meteor, the RAF’s first operational jet fighter, entered service in 1944 and was the only Allied jet to see combat during World War II. Powered by Rolls-Royce Welland or Derwent turbojets, it achieved speeds of 600 mph and was highly effective at intercepting V-1 flying bombs, destroying numerous targets, though it did not score air-to-air kills against manned aircraft during the war. Post-war, the Meteor became a key component of the RAF and was exported to countries like Australia, Argentina, and Israel. During the Korean War, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Meteors engaged Soviet-piloted MiG-15s, achieving at least three confirmed MiG kills but suffering losses due to the performance gap between the straight-wing Meteor and the swept-wing MiGs. With over 3,900 built, including reconnaissance, night-fighter, and trainer variants, the Meteor was a pioneering jet that transitioned air forces into the jet age, leaving a lasting legacy in aviation history.
