The F-101 Voodoo was a twin-engine, supersonic jet developed for the United States Air Force during the Cold War, with 807 aircraft produced. Originally designed as a long-range bomber escort, it was adapted for several roles, including fighter-bomber operations, tactical reconnaissance (RF-101) and all-weather interception (F-101B), with the F-101F serving as a two-seat trainer.
The USAF began operating RF-101Cs in Southeast Asia in 1961. These unarmed aircraft conducted dangerous, high-speed photographic reconnaissance missions over North Vietnam, Laos and South Vietnam, gathering vital intelligence on enemy positions and movements. The RF-4C Phantom II gradually assumed these duties, with the last RF-101Cs leaving Southeast Asia in November 1970.
The Royal Canadian Air Force acquired its first 66 Voodoos in 1961, comprising 56 CF-101B interceptors and 10 CF-101F trainers. Between 1970 and 1972, these were replaced by 66 upgraded, lower-hour aircraft under Operation PEACE WINGS. Five Canadian squadrons operated the Voodoo as part of NORAD's air defence network, with the CF-101 remaining in frontline interceptor service until 1984, when it was replaced by the CF-18 Hornet.
Capable of speeds exceeding Mach 1.7, the Voodoo played an important role in American and Canadian air operations throughout the Cold War.
