The Shadow R1 is a tactical intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force. Based on the Beechcraft King Air 350CER and modified for military ISR duties, the Shadow was acquired under an Urgent Operational Requirement to support operations in Afghanistan. Four aircraft were originally ordered in 2007, with the first delivered in 2009, and the fleet was later expanded. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67A turboprop engines, the Shadow carries advanced sensors, satellite communications, and defensive aids to collect and share intelligence in near real time.

Initially operated by No. 5 Squadron RAF, the Shadow later transferred to No. 14 Squadron RAF when that unit re-formed in the ISTAR role in 2011. Based at RAF Waddington, the Shadow has supported operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, the wider Middle East, and Eastern Mediterranean surveillance missions. Although originally procured as a temporary operational capability, the aircraft became part of the RAF’s core equipment programme and continues to serve while the fleet transitions toward the upgraded Shadow Mk2 standard.
