The de Havilland Sea Vixen was a British twin-boom carrier-based fighter operated by the Royal Navy during the Cold War. Developed by de Havilland from the earlier DH.110 design, the Sea Vixen was intended primarily for fleet air defence and all-weather interception duties aboard Royal Navy aircraft carriers. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines and equipped with airborne interception radar, the aircraft first flew in prototype form in 1951, while the production Sea Vixen FAW.1 entered Royal Navy service in 1959. The later FAW.2 variant introduced enlarged tail booms, improved missile capability, and increased operational range.

The Sea Vixen became the Royal Navy’s principal fleet air defence fighter during the 1960s and operated from carriers including HMS Ark Royal, HMS Eagle, and HMS Hermes. Armed with Firestreak and later Red Top air-to-air missiles, the aircraft was one of the first British fighters designed without internal guns, relying primarily on missile armament for air combat. The Sea Vixen served extensively during Cold War deployments east of Suez before retiring from Royal Navy frontline service in the early 1970s following the withdrawal of Britain’s large fleet carriers. A total of 145 production Sea Vixens were built, making it one of the Royal Navy’s last indigenous carrier-based fleet defence fighters.
