The Sea Harrier FA.2 was the Royal Navy’s definitive fleet air defence fighter, developed from the combat-proven Sea Harrier FRS.1 following lessons learned during the Falklands War. Entering Fleet Air Arm service in 1993, the FA.2 introduced the advanced Blue Vixen pulse-Doppler radar, modern avionics and compatibility with the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile, giving the Royal Navy a true beyond-visual-range air combat capability. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Pegasus vectored-thrust engine, it retained the ability to operate from small aircraft carriers using short take-offs and vertical landings.

The FA.2 served aboard carriers including HMS Invincible, HMS Illustrious and HMS Ark Royal, providing fleet air defence, combat air patrol and limited strike capability. Although it entered service after the Falklands War, it deployed on operations over Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq during Operation Southern Watch, where it conducted air defence, combat patrol and reconnaissance missions. While it never achieved an air-to-air victory, the combination of the Blue Vixen radar and AMRAAM missile gave it one of the most capable fighter systems of any naval V/STOL aircraft of its era.

The Fleet Air Arm operated 51 Sea Harrier FA.2s, comprising 33 upgraded FRS.1 aircraft and 18 newly built FA.2s. Several aircraft were lost in flying accidents during their service lives, but none were lost to enemy action. The Sea Harrier FA.2 was retired from Royal Navy service in 2006, bringing to an end more than a quarter-century of Sea Harrier operations. It remains widely regarded as one of the most capable carrier-based V/STOL fighters ever built.
