The Supermarine Scimitar was a British naval strike fighter developed by Supermarine for the Fleet Air Arm during the Cold War. Designed as a large, high-performance carrier aircraft capable of both fighter and nuclear strike missions, the Scimitar evolved from earlier Supermarine swept-wing jet fighter studies of the late 1940s. The prototype first flew on 19 Jan 1956, and the aircraft entered Fleet Air Arm service in 1958 with No. 803 Naval Air Squadron. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines, the Scimitar became the Royal Navy’s first operational carrier aircraft capable of delivering nuclear weapons and one of the Fleet Air Arm’s first large swept-wing carrier strike aircraft.

The Scimitar served primarily in strike, fleet air defence, and aerial refuelling roles aboard Royal Navy fleet carriers during the late 1950s and 1960s. The aircraft operated extensively from carriers including HMS Ark Royal, HMS Eagle, HMS Victorious, and HMS Hermes during a period when the Royal Navy still maintained a major fixed-wing carrier force. Although powerful and heavily armed, the Scimitar developed a reputation for demanding carrier handling characteristics and a high accident rate, with roughly half the fleet eventually lost in accidents during service. Despite these problems, the aircraft represented an important transitional step between early British naval jets and later carrier aircraft such as the Blackburn Buccaneer and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. A total of 76 production Scimitars were built before the type was withdrawn from frontline Fleet Air Arm service in 1969.
