RAF Type A Roundel White Mug

The Type A roundel featured concentric blue, white and red circles in 5:3:1 proportions. The design originated in 1915, when British military aircraft adopted a reversed version of the French roundel to provide a clear national identification marking. The RAF inherited it when the service was formed in 1918.

The Type A remained the RAF’s principal full-colour roundel throughout much of the interwar period. Brighter red and blue shades were introduced from late 1929, before duller colours were adopted as camouflage became standard during 1938.

During the Second World War, the Type A continued to be used mainly on lighter-coloured surfaces, particularly beneath the wings, while Type B and yellow-bordered Type A.1 roundels appeared in other positions. It was gradually replaced by the Type C roundel from mid-1942.
