The Type A.1 roundel added a yellow outer ring to the red, white and blue Type A design, producing overall proportions of 1:3:5:7. The yellow border made the national marking easier to distinguish against dark green and brown camouflage. It appeared on camouflaged RAF aircraft from 1937, although Type B roundels replaced it in many positions during 1938 and 1939.

The RAF restored the yellow-bordered marking to aircraft fuselage sides in May 1940, where it became one of the most recognisable British markings of the early Second World War. It remained in widespread use until the Type C.1 roundel began replacing it in Jul 1942, although older markings remained on some aircraft during the transition.
